Proposed changes to Park Regulations – June 2009

(Anchorage, AK) – The Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation has announced proposed changes to park regulations affecting:
  • The maximum that may be charged for boat launching would increase, to allow potential launch fee increases in areas to cover operating costs.

  • Changes are proposed to regulations for Chugach State Park, including leash requirements for pets on certain trails, closing the Eklutna Lakeside Trail to off-road vehicles between Dec. 1 and April 1, unless this area is otherwise closed to snowmobiles due to lack of snow, opening some trails to use of bicycles, and allowing the Director to close trails to horse use to protect trails from damage.

  • Within Wood-Tikchik State Park, regulation changes would implement more specific zoning regulations for certain private lands within the park.

  • For the Kenai River Special Management Area, a new “no wake zone” is proposed within the channel north of the island located between river mile 15.2 and river mile 14.7, which includes the upstream and downstream entrances to Castaway Cove.

  • Statewide, the definition for snowmobiles is changed to preclude vehicles using “low pressure tires”, to prevent use and damage by off-road vehicles on certain trails managed and groomed for use by snowmobiles.

  • For a full copy of the proposed regulations or the public notice, please contact the Department of Natural Resources’ Public Information Center in Anchorage (269-8400) or visit: alaskastateparks.org and look under “Special Notices.”

If you submitted comments in response to the department’s November 30, 2007 NOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES regarding fee increases for department services, state park land and water restrictions as they apply to persons with pets, the use of trapping, bicycles, off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, camping, horses, and pets in Chugach State Park, zoning on private lands and commercial use changes in Wood-Tikchik State Park, and boating speed limits in Kenai River Special Management Area, you will not need to resubmit comments under this notice, as those comments will be considered by the department before its adoption of regulation changes. However, the department welcomes additional written comments that you might have about changes proposed in this notice. Written comments may be sent to:
