The Survey Unit functions as the Department’s “surveyor
on staff”, providing technical expertise and actual
surveying services. We oversee surveys with an eye to protecting
the department’s interest in land and help the department
avoid litigation by watching out for rights of other landowners.
This includes issuing survey instructions and reviewing
surveys which are usually conducted by private sector surveyors.
The DNR Survey Unit functions as the Platting Authority
in the Unorganized Borough. Any subdivision of land, which
is not within the jurisdiction of a local borough or city
platting authority, (such as Municipality of Anchorage,
Fairbanks North Star Borough, etc) is required to be reviewed
and approved by DNR, before filing. Click
here for
more information on platting in the Unorganized Borough.
The Survey Unit also maintain records of all surveys ever
conducted on state land. Copies of State and Federal BLM
survey plats are now available online.
